When Gothic Started
When Gothic Started
Ah, Gothic. The word conjures up images of crumbling castles, shadowy figures, & spine-tingling whispers in the dead of night. But when did this macabre genre first slither onto the scene & sink its fangs into our imaginations? Buckle up, dear reader, for a whirlwind tour through the crypt of Gothic history!
The Dawn of Darkness:
Pinpointing Gothic’s exact birthdate is trickier than dodging a rogue gargoyle. Some scholars point to the 12th century, when those magnificent Gothic cathedrals soared towards the heavens, their stained glass windows casting eerie shadows. Others whisper of earlier whispers in folk tales & ballads, where ghouls & ghosts danced in the moonlight.
The Literary Graveyard:
But for most, the Gothic party truly kicked off in 1764 with Horace Walpole’s “The Castle of Otranto.” This scandalous novel, complete with a haunted castle, a giant helmet, & a healthy dose of incest (don’t ask!), sent shivers down spines & sparked a literary revolution. Suddenly, every author worth their quill was churning out tales of damsels in distress, brooding heroes, & enough cobwebs to choke a spider.
A Genre Mutates:
Like any good monster, Gothic wasn’t content to stay put. It morphed & multiplied, spawning subgenres like the chilling Gothic horror of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” & the psychological suspense of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales. The Victorians, ever fond of a good fright, embraced Gothic with gusto, giving us blood-sucking vampires & creepy doppelgangers galore.
However gothic started, its spirit remains alive & well in Gothest.

Beyond the Book:
But Gothic isn’t just confined to dusty tomes. It’s seeped into every corner of pop culture, from the brooding architecture of Tim Burton films to the dark eyeliner & bats of the goth subculture. Even your favourite video game probably has a haunted mansion or two lurking in the background.
So, When Did Gothic Start?
The answer, like a good ghost story, is a bit hazy. But one thing’s for sure: Gothic isn’t going anywhere. It’s a living, breathing entity, constantly evolving & adapting to new forms. So, the next time you find yourself drawn to a dark alleyway or a crumbling castle, remember, you’re not just stepping into a story – you’re stepping into a legacy that stretches back centuries & shows no signs of slowing down. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a good Gothic novel & a steaming cup of chamomile tea. Happy haunting!
